Making OC Mompreneurs 2012 ~ OC Parenting Magazine

This month I was featured as a OC Mompreneur of 2012 by Parenting OC Magazine and what a treat that was! I got a call that I had been chosen and then quickly a photoshoot was scheduled with Anamaria Brandt Photography. And the best part? The kids got to come along too!

True to being a mompreneur right at our photoshoot one of my kids lost a tooth, the other became shy (he does that when he finds a girl pretty) but luckily my littlest one (not camera shy at all) was ready to go! And there I was with a black dress (we were asked to wear black) with a pregnant belly that the dress fully brought out. Well, I rolled with it like you do as a mompreneur, got out a napkin for the tooth, gave her a huge smile for losing one more tooth (always a big deal), kept my shy-with-pretty-girls boy close to me, let my little one have at it and oh the prop we were asked to bring ended up being my belly.

And now for a little about me and Granola Babies through the questions we were asked to complete in preparation for the article feature.

Where did you grow up?

In the lovely Dominican Republic.

Why did you start your business?

Having been a new parent raising my baby green and natural, I knew there weren’t many stores to purchase unique products and also receive natural parenting resources. And so I wanted a place to create for other parents a one-stop shop and resource center to learn how to grow green and happy babies.

How many years has Granola Babies been running?

A proud 7  1/2 years (since 2005)

How did you grow your business from just an idea to a brand?

It came from years of having volunteered in natural parenting groups both in-person and online communities – from starting them to growing them and building a community of natural parents. Once we opened so many knew me that from the first day we opened we were receiving orders online.  However it wasn’t until other friendly store owners started to tell me that we are a “brand” and that their customers know us that I realized that we were as known as we are. It was a humble and honoring surprise.

What was the biggest obstacle you had to overcome in starting your business?

That’s a hard one to answer since I can’t think of any obstacles we had in the beginning! It was such a natural transition from the volunteer work I had been doing for so long.

How do you balance your business with being a mom?

A lot of creativity!

What’s the most difficult part of being a mompreneur?

I miss those days of having “nothing to do” and so heading out to the beach. We still do that but now there’s a long to-do list and it just has to wait…because we’re heading to the beach!

How did your children inspire your business model?

They inspired the entire business model as so much of the products we offer and the classes and events we host all come from what we’ve used with them and the support and resources that we as new parents would’ve loved to have.

What have you learned from being a mother that has made you a better business woman?

Kindness and empathy.

How do you like to spend your “me” time?

Enjoying date nights with my husband and with friends.

What is your advice to other mothers who want to start their own business?

Do what you love, do it with passion, be you and you’ll find your own niche.
