If you fell in love with wrapping your newborn in a snuggly, stretchy wrap, that wonderful feeing doesn’t have to end just because they’ve gotten a bit bigger. Enter the wonderful world of woven wraps!
Woven wraps are, like stretchy wraps, a single, long piece of fabric without any buckles, snaps or rings. They are simply tied, in a variety of positions, for front, back, and hip carries. A woven wrap differs from a stretchy wrap in its degree of supportiveness. The fabric tends to be extremely supportive, designed (often by textile engineers) specifically with babywearing in mind. That means it often has slight diagonal stretch, while being sturdy enough to hold up to the weight of a 30-pound toddler.
Woven wraps come in a dazzling array of different colors and prints. They are generally thicker than a stretchy wrap, though there are thin, cool woven wraps to be found. But despite the variety, they all boil down to a simple piece of cloth. They are how women have been carrying their babies across countless cultures and thousands of years.
That simple piece of cloth can be a bit intimidating, and it probably does have the steepest learning curve of all the different carrier types. That learning curve is not insurmountable, however; it just requires some time with an instructional DVD, youtube, or an experienced babywearer. With ten minutes of in-person instruction, or perhaps a half an hour of media-instruction, you will be off and running (perhaps with your baby on your back!).
Once you learn the most basic carry, you could leave it at that. Or, you could learn a multitude of different carries for the different ages and stages of your baby and toddler’s life. Depending on the length of your wrap, you can use it for a front, hip or back carry, and you can use it from newborn to preschool.
Woven wraps are ideal for people who really want to get their mileage out of a baby carrier, and are committed to wearing a baby well through toddlerhood. They continue the snuggly goodness of stretchy wraps with more support than can be imagined until you’ve tried a woven wrap.
If you’ve loved a woven wrap with an older toddler, but you’re expecting a new baby soon, it might just be time to try a STRETCHY WRAP.
