Stretchy Wraps
Most new parents quickly figure out that newborns babies like to be wrapped securely. That’s why swaddling is one of the first skills your nurse or midwife is likely to teach you. The feeling of being swaddled mimics what the baby felt for nine months in utero, and keeps them calm. Even better, then, to swaddle a baby next to the heartbeat they have been listening to for so long.
Stretchy wraps make a baby feel exactly like they are swaddled next to their mother’s (or father’s) heart, helping them gently transition to the outside world. Stretchy wraps are one long, single piece of fabric with no buckles, rings or snaps, and they are generally made of soft jersey, like your favorite old t-shirt.
While there are many ways to tie a wrap, stretchy wraps are almost always used for a front carry, and there is one basic way most users tie the wrap. It may seem like a lot of fabric, but the actual tying is not any more complicated than tying your shoe. Like that skill you learned when you were five, learning to tie your stretchy wrap may take you ten minutes, but by then you will be an old pro.
A newborn can be worn in a reclining position or an upright, tummy-to-tummy position. Because of the stretch, stretchy wraps can be tied on once in the morning, and baby can be popped in and out throughout the day. They are a great carrier to tie on before getting in the car, and then pop the baby directly from the carseat into the stretchy wrap before heading into your destination (avoiding the lugging of the carseat, or trying to wrap in a rainy parking lot).
Stretchy wraps can be shared between users, because one size generally fits all. A more petite user simply wraps the straps around their waist an additional time. They are extremely comfortable, since the stretchy fabric conforms to the wearer’s body and distributes the baby’s weight across the entire back, shoulders and hips.
If you like your stretchy wrap, but your baby is starting to feel a tad heavy, or you are interested in starting to do more back carries (which are not ideal in a stretchy wrap), you may be interested in a WOVEN WRAP.
Choose a stretchy wrap if you...
The main difference between the Moby and the Sleepy Wrap is that the Sleepy Wrap has more stretch. It contains 5% Spandex and so wrapping with a Sleepy Wrap requires that you tie it on tight since it will stretch to fit your baby. The Moby Wrap does not contain as much stretch as the Sleepy Wrap so you will tie leaving room for baby. Stretchy wraps in general are warmer on the body than woven wraps, but the Sleepy Wrap is a little less so than the Moby Wrap. When deciding which brand to get, I would choose based on location climate, but primarily based on color. The color you love is the one you'll wear and love as well.
And she's right! For her and her body the particular stretchy wrap she recommended to you worked well. Keep in mind that for 100+ others, the other brand worked better. Most parents love whichever stretchy wrap they purchased ~ whether it was the Moby Wrap or the Sleepy Wrap. The reason is that they are both so similar, they both serve the same purpose and they'll both cuddle your baby and be comfortable to you.
