Ring Slings

SB Ring SlingA Ring Sling is a long piece of fabric looped through a couple heavy-duty rings, forming a pouch that is worn over one shoulder with a long tail hanging down in front of the wearer’s body. The pocket created to cradle the baby is very similar to a pouch, but a ring sling is completely adjustable, simply by pulling on the hanging tail (by pulling separately on each edge, you will get a more custom fit). Once you figure out how to put the ring sling on and adjust it the first time, it is a very easy carrier to use.

Like pouches, ring slings are very popular for newborns. They are a great carrier to nurse in, and a newborn can be worn upright or reclining. The ring sling will continue to work in a hip carry with an older baby and toddler just as long as you can manage a one-shouldered carry. Many ring slings are made of such supportive material, that one-shouldered carries are comfortable for much longer than you might imagine. Like pouches, ring slings are occasionally pushed around for a back carry, but this isn’t very common and not your best bet for a regular back carry.

With a ring sling, it is essential to make sure the fabric is cupping the wearer’s shoulder and not riding up on the neck. Also, the fabric should be spread out in back, and not twisted. If, for some reason, one particular ring sling doesn’t work for you, you may just need to try a different shoulder style. They can vary quite a bit.

Some of the widely available ring slings have quite a lot of cumbersome padding and some are “closed tail” which means they only adjust so far. You will likely find these are not nearly as comfortable as the ring slings we sell.

A ring sling is wonderful for someone who wants to share a one-shouldered carrier with another wearer. It is great for running errands, or other situations where your little one wants up and down, repeatedly. While papas have been known to rock a manly ring sling, there is something very nice and feminine about the long flowing tail, and ring slings are often the choice of babywearers wanting to show off a beautiful carrier.
