Prefolds and Flats
Prefold and flat cloth diapers are the most economical cloth diapering method. Prefold cloth diapers are a rectangle piece of cloth that is folded on your baby and held in place on your baby using a pin or Snappi. And flat cloth diapers are larger cloths that are folded in various ways to create absorbancy for baby. And then a waterproof, fleece or wool cover is worn over the prefold or flat.
Prefold and flat cloth diapers are generally made of 100% cotton. In particular the two most popular fibers are Indian or Chinese cotton. There are both bleached and unbleached prefold and flat cloth diapers. Unbleached cotton will hide stains much better than bleached prefolds and are also softer.
We started cloth diapering in our family with prefolds and covers and found them easy to use, economical and great at containing blow-outs.

For a newborn, you'll need 24-36 total cloth diapers to wash every other day. An older baby and toddler use less diapers a day, so you'll need between 16-24 cloth diapers for your older baby and/or toddler. With prefold and flat cloth diapers, you'll also need diaper covers.
