POCKET CLOTH DIAPERS
Pocket style cloth diapers have become a favorite over the last decade, combining the ease of an all-in-one with the quick drying time of a prefold and cover.
Pockets diapers have a waterproof outer layer, eliminating the need for a cover, and a moisture-wicking inner layer. This inner layer is usually microfleece or suedecloth, and wicking means it pulls the moisture away from the baby’s skin and into the absorbent inner core. Baby’s skin stays dry, lowering the risk of diaper rash.
The waterproof layer and the wicking layer form a pocket, as the name suggests, and the pocket gets stuffed with absorbent materials of your choice. The ability to customize the absorbency is one of the best features of a pocket diaper. You can add more or less layers depending on whether you have a heavy or light wetter or whether it’s a bedtime or daytime diaper. The absorbent materials can be as simple as microfiber towels from the automotive section of the hardware store, or fancy hemp or organic cotton inserts designed for use in pocket diapers.
Once stuffed, pocket style diapers are as easy to put on as a disposable, making them a great choice for dads, daycares, or anyone wary or pins or folding techniques. They generally come with snap or aplix closures, and which you prefer will really end up being a personal choice.
When the diaper is soiled, you simply shake the absorbent inner materials into the diaper pail and then drop the rest of it in on top, washing everything in the same load. Because they come apart to be washed, they dry more quickly than an all-in-one diaper of the same absorbency.
For a newborn, you'll need 24-36 total cloth diapers to wash every other day. An older baby and toddler use less diapers a day, so you'll need between 16-24 cloth diapers for your older baby and/or toddler.
