Wool Care
WOOL CARE
Prior to initial use of a new wool cover you need to lanolize it.
You only need to wash the cover about once a month in Eucalan or woolwash to help refresh the cover if it begins to smell after it is aired out. You only need to Lanolize the cover when it looses water repellency and starts leaking or wicking heavily.
Slight wicking is normal for wool you just need to change more often or use a diaper doubler if it is happening often. For overnight if you notice more wicking just add a diaper doubler or two. Every baby is different so you may need to figure out which diaper works best for your baby.
Wool Cover Care and Lanolization
A simple way to lanolize a wool cover is to use a Wool Buddy and follow the directions or by using Northern Essence Lanolin Spray or by following the following directions:
1 - Microwave a jar or cup of water (about 6 oz) one to two minutes until the water is hot.
2 Add 1/4 inch of Lansinoh Lanolin and 1/2 capful of Eucalan Woolwash to the jar or cup of hot water. Mix together with a fork or a whisk until the water is white and milky and the lanolin is completely dissolved.
3 Fill a dishpan or large bowl with room temperature water. (The bowl must be big enough that the diaper cover can fit in it with room for water to cover it completely). Stir it again to make sure tha lanolin mixture is distributed evenly.
4 - Place the wool cover in the dishpan or bowl and gently push cover under the water. Let it soak for about 15 minutes.
5 - After it soaks for about 15 minutes, gently squeeze out the excess water and then roll the diaper cover between two towels to get almost all of the moisture out.
6 - Let the diaper cover dry for about 24 hours
To wash a wool cover without lanolizing it---

3 Fill a dishpan or large bowl with room temperature water. (The bowl must be big enough that the diaper cover can fit in it with room for water to cover it completely).
To Spot Clean Wool
What if you have a freshly washed/lanolized wool cover and it gets a little....hmmm...shall we say #2 on it?
To do a quick spot cleaning of a small stain on a Wool cover without washing the entire cover:
1. Rub the stain gently with a bar of pure olive oil soap or a bar of Ivory soap
2. Blot with a towel.
The stain should come right up and the cover will be ready to use again without needing to be fully washed again.
You can also wait until the poop dries before cleaning sometimes it makes it easier to gently scrape off before spot cleaning.
Daily Care of Wool Covers
Wool diaper covers are wonderful because unless poop gets on it they just need to be aired out between uses. Wait until it is dry before using again. If poop does get on it just follow the spot clean instructions above.
