  • BabyKicks Hemparoo®

BabyKicks Hemparoo® Diapers and Joey-Bunz are made from 55% hemp and 45% cotton.

Please wash your diapers three times in hot water with detergent, drying them each time before you first use them. They'll continue to increase in absorbency with use, but that should be enough to get most of the natural oils washed out.

    Washing your hemp:

You may use any detergent that does not contain enzymes (as enzymes can eat away at your baby's skin once he or she wets, causing a painful rash). If you use a soap product, be sure to do a second cycle with 1/3 cup baking soda to avoid build-up. You may also want to try using 1/4 cup vinegar in the rinse.

What to do for "stinky" hemp:

Since hemp is such an absorbent material it sucks everything right to the core of the fiber. This causes smells from a residual build-up once your baby wets. You may not ever experience this, depending on your water type and wash routine.

There's a couple of things you can try to solve this.

    - Try washing your diapers or Joey-Bunz in hot water with no detergent, 1/3 cup baking soda and 1/4 cup vinegar. Do this a few times until the water no longer looks soapy at the end of the cycle.

    - If the smell remains, you may want to try boiling your hemp for five minutes.

-After you get the smell out of your hemp, be sure to use baking soda on a regular basis to keep everything smelling fresh.

    Care Instructions
Fasten tabs to laundry tabs on inside of diaper (this is important).

    Remove insert.
    Wash warm.
Hang dry with the rest of your pocket diapers and diaper covers.

    Bumkins

    Laundering Bumkins Cloth Diapers
Applies to the “All-In-One” Diaper, Fold-Over and Flat Diapers

    1- Rinse
After removing the soiled diaper from your baby, shake solid waste off of the diaper as best as possible (not necessary for breast-fed infants). Some parents prefer to rinse diapers in cold water to prevent stains from setting. When using the Bumkins All-in-One diaper, be sure to fold the velcro tabs inward onto the small loop piece beside it, to prevent the tabs from sticking to each other during the wash.

    2- Pre-treat
Store rinsed diapers in a covered diaper pail. Pre-treating diapers while they are being stored before laundering will prevent most staining or odor problems, however it is not necessary.

    3- Wash
Wash diapers in warm water with your choice of laundry detergent. Diapers should only be treated with chlorine-free bleach. Pre-treating is recommended for only the diapers that require special attention, rather than adding bleach to an entire load. Chlorine bleach causes rapid deterioration of all fabrics, the use of it will void all guarantees on any Bumkins products. An extra rinse may be necessary if you have very hard water or tend to use more than the recommended amount of detergent per load.

    4 - Dry
Tumble or hang the diapers to dry, plan for a longer drying time than other clothing. Turn All-in-One diapers inside out, flipping the inner panel to the other side. If they are not completely dry after one cycle in the dryer, hang or air them to dry. Excessive heat from the dryer will wear the diapers out more quickly. Do not use fabric softener (liquid or sheets) as they work by “coating” the fabric. This will decrease the absorbency of the diapers and could cause skin irritation.

    Laundering Bumkins Diaper Covers
Also applies to waterproof bibs, aprons and totes

    1- Wash
You can hand-wash the Diaper Cover under warm running water, lathering it with anti-bacterial hand soap. You can also machine wash the cover on a gentle cycle making sure the Velcro tabs are closed.

    2- Dry
Bumkins Diaper Covers dry very quickly. Hanging the Covers to dry is not only fast, but the best way to preserve the integrity of the components. They can withstand being tossed in the dryer if that occurs, but the heat from the dryer causes the fabric to wrinkle.

    Bummis

    Washing your Bummis Diaper Covers

Diaper covers can be re-used until soiled or smelly.
Simply rinse off any urine residue and air dry in between uses.
Rotate your covers after each change.

Check the care instructions on the label of your cover!

The following products should be washed in lukewarm water and hung to dry or air dried at a low setting in the dryer:

    Bummi Original
    Bummi Cotton
    Whisper Pant
    Cotton Whisper Pant

The following products can be washed in hot or warm water and dried at a regular setting in the dryer. Do not over dry.

    Super Whisper Wrap
    Super Snap
    Training Pant

Always close the Velcro™ or Aplix™ closures before washing

Don’t use bleach or whitening agents. They will breakdown the fibers of your diapers and covers and are also very harsh on your baby’s skin and the environment

Never soak your covers! This will interfere with their waterproof qualities.

Please note that some models of diaper covers should be washed separately from diapers.

Important tips for success in cotton diapering!

    • Don’t use bleach or whitening agents. They will breakdown the fibers of fabrics and destroy your diaper covers. Not to mention that they are very harsh on your baby’s skin and the environment...
When washing or soaking diapers, a good alternative to chlorine bleach is the environmentally friendly oxygenated bleach.  But be careful, not all are created equal...make sure the product you choose contains no additives beyond sodium carbonate.  One choice is available at:
Oxyboost.com.  They have instructions on their website as to how to use their product with cloth diapers.  As always, do not soak covers.
    • Don’t use fabric softeners. They will leave a waxy residue on your diapers and covers and lead to leaking. Even using dry sheets in the regular laundry can leave a residue in the dryer, which can effect your diapering.
    • Don’t use any natural cleaning products that contain oils or softeners which may coat the fibers of your diapers or covers. People have reported problems with the following cleaning agents:
      • All Free and Clear (and other Free and Clear detergents)
      • Dr. Bronner’s Soap
      • Some versions of Bio-Kleen
      • 7Th Generation
      • Dreft
      • Ivory Snow
      • Most "pure soap" products
    • Products that have been damaged by natural cleaning products can sometimes be saved! Repeat the following process twice: Run your covers and diapers through a wash with only hot water (if allowed by manufacturer’s washing instructions). Run a second wash using 1/2 cup baking soda and 1/2 cup vinegar in the wash - and 1/2 cup vinegar again in first rinse cycle. Run a second rinse cycle with plain water.
    • Don’t use laundry detergents that contain perfumes, dyes, chlorine bleaching agents or any stain guard ingredients.
    • Don’t use too much detergent in your wash as this can lead to stinky ineffective diapers and covers and skin irritations. A little goes a long way!
    • Do be careful when using diaper rash ointments, especially those containing fish oils. These can stain your diapers and covers, make them smelly and ruin their performance. Use all ointments sparingly. Flushable liners act as a good barrier for creams.
    • Do use the highest water levels in your washing machine to ensure complete rinsing of diapers and covers. Any detergent residue will affect the performance of diaper products!
    • Do unfold your diapers before soaking or washing to allow complete cleaning.
    • Do add occasionally a 1/2 cup of vinegar to the first rinse cycle in order to remove any residual detergent. This deodorizes, sanitizes and brightens. Don’t overuse or use in final rinse, as this will have the opposite effect! Your diapers may become smelly. Don’t use vinegar on diaper covers except one time when you are trying to strip detergent residue off.
    • Do use an extra spin cycle after washing. This will reduce drying time up to 25%!
    • Do throw a dry towel in the dryer with your diapers. This will reduce drying time as well!

Make sure that your covers fit snugly and that you are using the correct size of diaper and cover for your baby.

Smell your diapers and covers after they are washed! If they smell stinky or like detergent - wash them again with less detergent and more water.

    Fuzzi Bunz

    CARE AND USE

    Washing...

We could not make it any more simple for you to wash your diapers. Fuzzi Bunz were invented by a woman who HATED laundry (and still does) so these diapers are easy use and easy care!

First! Fuzzi Bunz are a single use diaper - meaning you using it once and then wash it. You can not take the insert out and put another one in and keep using the Fuzzi Bunz. This was what was described in the book "Diaper Changes" and it is horribly incorrect. Use a Fuzzi Bunz and wash it.

When wet, simply separate the two pieces or shake the insert out into a basket, diaper pail or one of MOE's hanging diaper bags for easy washing.

If soiled, solid poop will "plop" right off of the diaper into the toilet. No rinsing or swirling... yuck. If there are "stickies" on the fleece whatever does not shake off into the toilet will dissolve in the wash. If you just can't put it in the washer that way you can get a "mini-shower" and spray the poop off of the diaper before putting it in your washer.

Run a rinse or soak cycle first with no detergent just to dissolve any "left overs" and get much of the urine and mess out and spun out into the sewer where it belongs.

After the soak cycle run a HOT wash with the detergent of your choice. Do not over use your detergent as the full recommended amount by the manufacturer is a bit too much - however you do need enough to clean dirty diapers. 1/2 the recommended amount is sufficient and if you find you have a cleaning problem then add more detergent.

Your hot wash cycle will more than likely have a cold rinse that follows. No need to run a second rinse unless you are having a really dirty diaper problem or feel you must if it was a particularly dirty load.

You can either tumble your diapers dry on low heat or hang to dry, either way they will dry quickly and be ready to put back on your baby.

    A Few Dos & Don'ts

    • Do wash your Fuzzi Bunz after each use.
    • Do make sure that there is a snug fit
    • Do make sure that you have the correct size for your baby.
    • Do contact the manufacturer if you have any problems
    • Do not use fabric softener or use pure soap products on your Fuzzi Bunz. [What are pure soap products? Scroll down!]
    • No bleach or exposure to high heat for prolonged periods of time.

Detergents we recommend for use with Fuzzi Bunz:

Allens Naturally is our detergent of choice, you can buy it directly from Allen's Naturally or from Mother of Eden. Its economical for the amount of loads it will wash, washes clean with no residue and will keep your diapers clean!

The Low Down on Detergents & Soaps

    Pure Soap
Natural soap products such as pure glycerine soap or cleaning agents made with citrus or other oils do not work for this reason: They may clean the fibers, but a slight oily film or "soap scum" is left on the fleece. When this happens it makes it very difficult for urine to get through the layer of fleece to the absorbent core in the middle of Fuzzi Bunz as you know oil and water do not mix.

The result?? Either Fuzzi Bunz that leak or the fleece will stay wet next to the skin and not become dry as it should be.

    Fixing the problem

We have (as have others) had many theories on what is called "stripping diapers." I don't like that word. I would rather call it just plain ole upkeep and something that should be done every now and again as a preventative measure in taking care of your diapers and prolonging their life.

If you have any of the following problems this system should work for you:

    1. Persistent stinkiness
    2. Repelling fleece
    *
    3. Fleece that stays wet
    4. Leaking diapers

*The fleece used in Fuzzi Bunz is a proprietary fleece designed to our specifications and needs. Our fleece is designed to absorb water quickly, dry to the touch quickly and resist residue buildup.

    Solving the Problem

    1. Get a good detergent like Allen's Naturally.

    2. Run all of your diapers through a plain water hot wash.

    3. Run all of your diapers through a hot wash with the full recommended amount of detergent.

    4. If the problem is bad, repeat step three.

    5. Run a cold rinse. If you have hard water you may want to add a water softener such as Baking Soda or Calgon Water Softener to soften your water and help release any left over detergent.

    6. If you still see bubbles in your rinse run another cold rinse.

    7. You can either Sun your diapers or tumble on low.

After this process (I know it is involved) you should have very clean diapers that do not smell like anything - no perfume - no urine. When the Fuzzi Bunz are completely dry, if you were having a buildup problem (repelling) take a nasal aspirator and put an insert into the pocket. Fill the nasal aspirator with water and put it close to the fleece and "pee" on the diaper with the aspirator. If it goes through your repelling problem is fixed. However, again, repelling should not be a problem with Fuzzi Bunz diapers.

    Happy Heiny’s

Store wet and soiled diapers in a dry pail. There is no need to rinse soiled diapers prior to washing. The solid waste of older babies can be removed by gently shaking the diaper over a toilet.

Remove inserts from pocket prior to washing. Then:

    • Cold Soak
    • Wash on hot with slightly less than 1/4 cup of detergent
    • You can add a downy ball of vinegar to the wash if desired. I recommend a downy ball because it releases the vinegar at the right time. You do not need to wait by the machine.
    • Rinse well to ensure all detergent is removed from diapers.
    • Drying in the dryer is allowed for PUL. We personally dry our PUL products on high heat and although we have had prolonged use with these products we have not noticed any break down of our PUL. Drying on high heat can keep your Happy Heiny functioning like new.

    Detergents to use:

We recommend Tide, Sunlight, Cheer, Era, and Clout (Costco brand) These are not made with any of the natural oily substances which leave residue on fleece.

    Detergents NOT to use:

Natural soaps are often made with oils. These should NOT be used. They will leave a residue on fleece causing it to repel urine.
The following detergents will cause a soap build up. Do NOT use them.

Dr. Bronners Soap,7th Generation and Bio-Kleen.

Baby detergents such as Ivory Snow, Dreft and any ALL free detergents.

Never use fabric softener of any kind on diapers. Liquid fabric softeners and dryer sheets both leave a waxy residue on diapers which causes fleece to repel urine and decreases the absorbency of other diapers.

The use of diaper rash creams can cause repelling. For best results either place a small wash cloth on top of the fleece or use a rice paper/gerber paper liner.

    Stripping Diapers:

Build up refers to residue left by detergents, fabric softeners, and other substances used to clean diapers. In rare instances, baking soda will react with certain minerals in water and also cause build up. If you notice a decrease in the functionality of your diapers, build up may be the culprit.

Stripping refers to the removal of residue on diapers. To strip diapers, simply hand wash your diaper with your regular dish soap (gets the oils out), add a bit of dish soap to the fleece, either rub the fleece vigoriously together or use a medium bristle dish brush or hard bristle tooth brush to scrub the fleece. Turn inside out and repeat on this side. Rinse very good, making sure that the water runs clear. You may use this method at any time you feel that the diaper may be repelling or as a preventative measure once a week. If you are still having problems, special cleaning agents may be used to strip diapers. These options include a very hot wash using 2 scoops Oxyclean or you may also try a hot wash with 1 ball of RLR (found at Wal-Mart in the laundry aisle hanging on a clip).

    Hemp:

Your hemp product has been professionally washed and dried 1 time. It will need up to 8 more washings and dries before it is fully absorbent. When washing you hemp the first few times do NOT was it with your fleece products. Hemp has natural oils in it and the oils can coat your fleece. After your hemp has been fully primed you may wash it with all of your diapering products.

    • Laundry advice

    1. When a nappy has been used, rinse it out with cold water and squeeze it out properly. Tip: rinse out the nappy with the shower hose in the toilet.

    2. Put the damp nappies in a bucket. You need not /should not add water or anything else to the bucket; the nappies can lie there up to 3 days. Tip: put the nappies directly in the laundry drum, then all you have to do is start the washing machine whenever you want.

    3. Wash when you have time. The nappies and the night/day pants can normally be washed at 60° C. To get the nappies extra clean you can wash them at 90° C if necessary. Tip: Don't miss the chance to wash the nappies together with the rest of your laundry.

    4. Preferably hang-dry the laundry and it will be dry in 8 hours.Tumble dryers tend to wear on the fabric more. Keep in a practical place. Tip: If you fold your folding nappies in advance, your nappy changes will be faster

Do not use softener. Softener forms a film on the outside of the fabic and the absorptive properties then deteriorate significantly.

Do not use bleach with the nappy pants. You can use bleach with the nappies on occasion.

Avoid detergents that contain zeolites. Zeolites are small particles of aluminium that ruin your clothes. Since the nappies are washed often, zeolites put extra wear on them.

The basic function of cloth nappies is the same as that of other nappies. The difference is that they can be re-used.

How to Wash Your Hemp Diapers

    The Simple Version:
    1. Remove solids into the toilet
    2. Rinse diapers in a cold rinse
    3. Wash on Hot with a double rinse cycle
    4. Hang to dry (preferred) or dry in dryer

The More Complex Version (for those who are more inquisitive or have other issues):

    1. Always empty solid waste into the toilet before putting in the washing machine. If you have a hard time getting all of the solid waste off, I strongly suggest investing in a Mini Shower, they are awesome and hook right onto the back of your toilet.
    2. The best suggestion I have heard for dirty diaper storage is to keep your washer filled to a low level with water and continually throw your dirty diapers in during the day or use a bucket filled with water ~ this is called a wet pail. Empty and refill your washer or bucket with water periodically to get rid of the waste water and to help keep any elements from setting in the diaper.
    3. If you cannot or do not want the diapers sitting in your washer all day, place in a wetbag or dry pail and set aside until laundry time. I suggest not leaving soiled diapers for longer than 3 days.
    4. When ready to wash, rinse your diaper with cold water allowing the diaper to fully rinse before the actual wash cycle.
    5. Wash your hemp diapers in hot water with desired laundry detergent. Do not ever use fabric softener since it is known to reduce the absorbency of the diaper by coating the fibers.
    6. Do a final double rinse and I suggest an extended spin cycle to reduce drying time.
    7. Either hang to dry (which is the preferred method for diaper longevity) or dry in the dryer, but never insert a dryer sheet as it too will effect the absorbency of the material.

Please note that your diapers will periodically need to be stripped of left-in laundry detergent or deep down oils and grime. To do this you can wash in plain water several times checking during the agitation cycle for any bubbles. You will know when all the soap is eliminated because there will be no bubbles in the agitated water. You can also use soap offered or recommended by many of the diaper sites to reduce or eliminate build-up. If you do find that your diapers are carrying an odor still, it usually has to do with the water type you have and the detergent you use. Some detergents are harder to get out of soft water or hard water and may just be reaking havoc on you through unpleasant odors. Be open to trying different kinds of detergent to find what is best suited for you. Every location and water supply is different!

If you notice after many washings that your PUL is not as waterproof as before, try purchasing DWR (water resistant coating spray in the Wal-Mart camping section) and applying to PUL as directed.

More on Odors: Because Hemp is a favorite material for nighttime wear due to its incredible denseness and absorbency, you may use it so often that you find your child waking up with an unusual vinegary odor. This can be due to two different things, detergent build up as discussed above or it may not be getting fully clean. To ensure it is getting fully clean, consider placing a pot of boiling water in your hot wash cycle to make sure the water is getting hot enough to get deep down in the very dense hemp material. Afterwards, try placing your hemp diapers in the sun for a day or two to dry out afterwards. The sun is a natural bleaching agent and since using household bleach isn't good for the material in any cloth diaper, the sun is certainly the next best thing and has no chemicals to harm your little one either. Note that prints may fade with the suns bleaching. If you have a particular set in stain that you want to get out, try applying lemon juice to the stain before placing in the sun.

    Stacinator

Caring for your Stacinator Fleece and So Simple! covers

Fleece is 100% polyester. It allows superior air circulation. This is why it works so well as a fabric for a diaper cover. We all know how much wetness our babies create. Fleece allows air to circulate through the cover and therefore, reduces diaper rash caused by prolonged exposure to wetness. In addition, it is soft to the touch, dries in a flash, and can withstand laundry abuse.

Ok...this just can't be any easier. Machine wash in Warm water, cold, or hot. Tumble dry.

Fleece is the *wonder fabric*. Dryer sheets can help to make it even more water resistant. This improves the performance. I do only suggest this as a last resort though if you have some leaking. I normally wash my covers with any old load of laundry as long as it isn't really soiled and needs special attention. In a world full of *diaper washing no no's*....here is some relief. There is almost no wrong way to wash fleece.

Tip: If you suddenly find that your fleece is leaking, simply switch laundry soaps (use Dr.Bronner's for a change or even mild dish soap). This should solve the problem. If it doesn't, Nikwax products will come to the rescue.

Caring for your Stacinator Wool covers

Hand wash your wool cover in cold water with like colors. Hang to dry. You may have a bit of shrinkage after the first washing. You may re-lanolize as needed. We recommend using Eucalan wool wash to care for your covers. It has natural lanolin right in the bottle. You never have to worry about when to lanolize. It is done for you each time you wash.

**Note** Dark colored wool will bleed.
*tip* For bleeding wool, mix 3 cups white vinegar with 3tbsp salt, wet wool in lukewarm water, add to vinegar/salt mixture. Microwave for two, 3minute sessions. Allow to COMPLETELY cool, rinse in lukewarm water, wash, re-lanolize. (if you rinse before allowing to completely cool, you may unintentionally felt your garment)

    Swaddlebees

Pocket diapers with Polyurethane Laminate (PUL) outer layers should be washed and dried on hot before using. This will help seal any needle holes left in the PUL during construction.

Please allow your diapers to cool after drying them. Stretching the elastic while the diapers are still warm can lead to elastic failure.

On wash day, run the dirty diapers in a cold soak or prewash. If you have already soaked your diapers in a pail, spin out any remaining dirty water. Wash your diapers in HOT water with a moderate amount of detergent (1/4 - 1/2 of the recommended dose). Over-dosing on detergent produces build up and is the single most common cause of leaking problems.  An additional rinse can be used for particularly soiled loads. Make sure that your diapers are rinsed clean. Any residue from poop, urine, detergent or vinegar can make your diapers smell.

Do not use fabric softener. It will coat the diapers making them water repellent and will cause leaks! Be aware that if you use dryer sheets in your dryer for other laundry this can coat your dryer and transfer to your diapers. If you encounter leaks, try line drying instead. "Free and clear" type detergents and natural products and soaps are not recommended for diapers containing polyester because of the soap build up they tend to leave. This build up can cause repelling, leaks and rashes in sensitive skin. Diapers do not require much detergent, too much will leave residue causing your diapers to possibly stink, leak, or leave baby with a rash. 1/4 the recommended amount per load is sufficient.
