The After Birth Project

Did you know that 1 out of 8 women suffer from postpartum depression?

Postpartum depression is a clinical depression that affects many women around the world. And the After Birth Project is a documentary that is exploring why women suffer from postpartum depression and how to prevent it from happening.

This week I had the pleasure of meeting and talking to the co-founder of the After Birth Project, Elizabeth Reynolds.  I shared with her how I’ve had three children and have never had postpartum depression, but that with each birth I was surrounded and taken care of for the first few weeks. With each birth my mother or my husband’s mother came and they both fed me throughout the day, took care of household duties like laundry and when I had other children the would play with them so that I could focus only on the baby and me the first few weeks. We both commented how in our culture it seems that women are left on their own after birth and how that may play into postpartum depression.

In the clip below, Elizabeth interviews CNN 2011 Hero of the Year Award Winner Ibu Robin Lim, who discusses this very topic.

I strongly believe that the After Birth Project is a documentary in the making that we must have in our society. To learn more about the documentary, please visit the After Birth Project website – www.afterbirthproject.com. If you’re on Facebook, please also LIKE them on their page.
