Once you’ve become a convert to cloth diapers and even if you've not, you might start to ask yourself why you’re throwing away disposable menstrual pads and tampons every month, adding to landfills and literally inserting chemicals inside your body. The good news is, there are as many wonderful reusable options for menstrual products as there are for diapers. Reusable menstrual products are environmental friendly, safer for your body, and easier on your wallet.
If you are used to using pads and pantiliners, washable cloth menstrual pads will be a natural switch. Instead of throwing them in the trash after each use, you simply throw them in the laundry bin. Made of lovely, soft, and often organic fabrics, they are much more comfortable than crinkly paper and not filled with harsh chemicals either. For one cycle you need 6-12 small pads and 1-3 larger pads, depending on your flow. This is an initial investment which will quickly be recouped after a few months of not having the run to the store and buy more disposable pads.
If, on the other hand, you are a tampon kind of girl, you can consider switching to the Diva Cup, a silicone cup placed inside the vagina to collect menstrual flow. It may look bulky at first, but once you get the hang of inserting it, you won’t feel it and it will not leak. Free of latex and BPA, the Diva Cup can be safely worn for up to twelve hours at a time, and can be confidently used while running, swimming, and participating in the most extreme sports you can imagine. You only need one Diva Cup, which can simply be rinsed and reinserted again and again.
Never make your significant other run out and pick up feminine hygiene products again. And more to the point: do something that better for you and the planet at the same time!
