DIAPER COVERS
Diaper Covers have come a long way since the plastic pants of the 70’s. The diaper cover serves as the waterproof barrier between your baby’s wet tush and your arms (or carpet, or couch), so it behooves you to choose your diaper covers wisely.
Since diaper covers are the outer layer, aesthetics come into play more than they do for the inner layer which receives the poop. As such, they are often available in a wide array of adorable prints and colors. They come with snap and aplix closure options, and you will have to do some trial and error to figure out which you prefer.
Diaper covers are sometimes referred to as “diaper wraps” when the style means they wrap around from the back to the front. But don’t let that confuse you: all diaper wraps are diaper covers, serving the same function of providing a waterproof outer layer to the absorbent inner layer.
Diaper covers are available in wool (which requires more upkeep) and synthetic options, usually fleece and PUL (polyurethane laminate). You will need fewer diaper covers than diapers, because unless they get soiled with poop, diaper covers can generally be reused several times before they need washing.
If wool sounds like a lot of work for something that’s going to get pooped on, you should know that wool has a lot to commend itself in the diapering world. Wool covers are breathable, eliminating many a diaper rash. They are also antibacterial and don’t retain odors. Wool sounds hot, but it’s actually cool in the summer and definitely cooler than synthetics or disposables.
Diaper cover are used with fitteds, prefolds and hybrid cloth diapers. And since you reuse the cover again during the day, you don't need as many diaper covers as you do fitteds, prefolds and inserts. For a newborn, you'll need 6-8 diaper covers and for an older baby and/or toddler, you'll need 4-6 diaper covers in order to wash every other day.
