About Softbums Cloth Diapers

Softbums Cloth Diapers

Softbums cloth diapers are a hybrid diaper in that you can reuse the cover and instead of a prefold there’s an insert. But, Softbums aren’t your ordinary hybrid cloth diaper. They are one size yes, but the way you would adjust the sizing is different than others.

Softbums are adjustable by elastics held by toggles inside of the diaper cover. To adjust the cover, you grab the elastics from the small opening in the waist area of the cover and pull gently to adjust to the size you need for your baby. Because of this feature a Softbums cover can fit small newborn babies – and yet because it’s adjustable it can also fit larger babies too. I once tried the cover on a beautiful preemie baby using a preemie prefold. The baby was around 5 lbs and the cover fit perfectly.

Even though it fits small babies, it shouldn’t be thought of as a newborn cloth diaper only. My son was 22 months when he potty trained and he wore Softbums up until he potty trained. He was about 32 lbs at that time.

Elastics are tucked back in after diaper cover is adjusted.

Dry pod in the Softbums cover.

Most of the parents at the store that like Softbums usually get the full package – 24 dry pods (that’s your insert), 8 covers and 8 minis (perfect as doublers). But, if you already have a stash of cloth diapers and want to mix in something quick to use then I recommend starting with 6-8 dry pods and 2-4 covers.

To wash Softbums I recommend my basic washing instructions –

Front Loader Cloth Diapering Washing

  1. Pre-wash on cold with a little bit of detergent
  2. Full wash on hot (not sanitize cycle, but regular hot cycle) with recommended amount of detergent
  3. Another pre-wash on cold with no detergent
  4. Dry inserts in the dryer and air dry your covers

Regular Top Loader Cloth Diapering Washing

  1. Rinse on cold with no detergent
  2. Full wash on hot with recommended amount of detergent
  3. Another cold rinse with no detergent
  4. Dry inserts in the dryer and air dry your covers

Happy cloth diapering!
