ALL IN ONE (AIO) CLOTH DIAPERS
All-in-One Cloth Diapers are just what they sound like: a self-contained diaper requiring no cover, liner, inserts or pins. They go on almost exactly like a disposable diaper, but can be reused again and again. They are the perfect choice for daycare, the church nursery, or anytime you need to provide an easy diaper solution for a caregiver without explaining your cloth diapering system. They are also great for middle-of-the-night changes when you don’t want to stick your baby with a pin in your sleepy stupor.
All-in-one’s (or AIOs) have a waterproof outer layer, several layers of absorbency built in, and they may or may not have a wicking inner layer that draws moisture away from the baby’s skin. They close with either aplix or snaps, and you will discover your personal preference on that issue only through trial and error.
Because AIO’s are one unit, they are simply dropped in the diaper pail and washed as one unit. This is extremely convenient, but it’s where you may run into the only drawback of an AIO: they can take a very long time to dry. This can be particularly frustrating when you have a mix of systems, and all your other diapers have been dry for ages, but the AIO’s need another drying cycle.
But for many people, the convenience of AIO’s far outweighs the inconvenience of the drying time. Even if you end up being more prone to another system, it never hurts to have a few AIO’s in your stash for those occasions when you need to send a diaper with the babysitter.
For a newborn, you'll need 24-36 total cloth diapers to wash every other day. An older baby and toddler use less diapers a day, so you'll need between 16-24 cloth diapers for your older baby and/or toddler.
